So many people (ok, 1 or 2) have asked me to revive this blog. I just haven’t found the time or the energy to get back to post­ing reg­u­larly again, and of course — the longer you wait, the harder it gets. Inter­est­ingly enough though, I star­ted this blog by post­ing daily for a good while (back in 2006). Post­ing fre­quency has decreased since then sig­ni­fic­antly, with the last post before this being about 8 months old (!).

Any­way, I’ve thought about doing this for a while now (it all star­ted with this art­icle at this won­der­ful web­site /​blog) and so I’m just going to give it at shot. I’ll start (read: this blog into) a pho­tob­log. What exactly this means, I don’t know yet. But I think it’ll be some­thing along the lines of: I pick a photo from my archives or a recent one and talk about it. Be it the story behind it, what’s so spe­cial about it (tech­nic­ally, emo­tion­ally, artist­ic­ally, or what­not) or what went through my head when I was tak­ing it. Not sure how often I’ll man­age to post some­thing, but I hope more fre­quently then once every 8 months ;-)

Oh, I’ll stop writ­ing silly one-​liners at the end of my posts [I’m run­ning out of them].

As a follow-​up to my attempts described here — that is use the Sony Remote Cam­era Con­trol (on a Mac) to take n pic­tures at spe­cified inter­vals — I finally came up with a (free) solu­tion!

The prob­lem was that the app seems to be so badly pro­grammed (for instance, there is the issue with the graph­ics) that it’s neither Applescript-​able nor UI-​scriptable. It doesn‘t even have a single key­board short­cut — why at least can‘t I take a pic­ture with the space key?? Any­way, so I had to resort to the Auto­mator with its new “Watch me do” func­tion­al­ity (plus a little bit of Applescript), and it finally works! Here is how you can profit from it too:

1. Down­load this archive
2. Put the two files into “/​Applications/​Sony Image Data Suite”
3. Con­nect your Alpha 700 (in Remote Con­nec­tion mode) and start the “Remote Cam­era Con­trol” App
4. Make all your pho­to­graphic set­tings and adjustments
5. Open “Inter­val Timer”
6. Run the script

Of course you’re wel­come to modify things, this is just a very ele­ment­ary, quick & dirty approach. If you have any sug­ges­tions for this, please let me know.

I was so drunk, I couldn’t even pee attention.

Letz­tes Wochen­ende war ich in Lime­rick, im süd­li­chen Wes­ten von Irland. Dort fan­den zwei Sachen statt: Ein Gos­pel –Work­shop, und ein Kon­zert — von nie­mand gerin­ge­rem als dem Har­lem Gos­pel Choir!!!

Der Work­shop war ganz nett, aber hat mir per­sön­lich nicht wirk­lich viel gebracht. Es gab irgend­wie nichts zu ler­nen /​mit nach Hause neh­men. Bei dem Kon­zert war das aller­dings was ganz ande­res. Ich hatte zwar erwar­tet, dass es bestimmt schon cool wird, aber dass es dann sooo genial war hätte ich mir nie träu­men las­sen. Dass die Mit­glie­der in dem Chor die Ober­ham­mer­stim­men haben war ja abzu­se­hen, aber die Ener­gie und Dyna­mik, die sie an den Tag gelegt haben, das war ein­fach unglaub­lich…

Das beste war aber: Da wir ein paar aus­ge­wählte von uns “Vor­band” waren, wur­den wir dann auch zu den letz­ten 5 Songs mit ihnen auf die Bühne gebe­ten und durf­ten somit “Oh Happy Day”, “Isn’t She Lovely”, “Cele­bra­tion”, “We Are The World” sowie “Amen” mit ihnen zusam­men sin­gen! Ham­mer, was für eine Erfah­rung. Das ist bestimmt, wie mit Boris Becker mal ein paar Sätze Ten­nis zu spie­len!

Danach ging’s dann mit den gan­zen Chor­leu­ten (fast alles Iren) in der Hotel­bar zur Sache, wo wir bis in die Mor­gen­stun­den gezecht und gefei­ert haben…

As described in ample detail (but in Ger­man) over at the pod​ster​.de for­ums, here is a little dia­gram illus­trat­ing how to record a skype (gizmo, ichat, sight­speed, etc.) call and your own voice with Gar­age­band, only using free soft­ware tools. This is not as straight­for­ward as I thought, and to the best of my know­ledge this is the only solu­tion at the moment that won’t cost you any money.

The idea is to use Sound­flower, which cre­ates a vir­tual 16 chan­nel audio device. In there you stick (1) the audio from your VOIP applic­a­tion (say into chan­nel 1 & 2) by using Sound­flower (16ch) as audio out­put device as well as (2) your own micro­phone (say into chan­nel 3 & 4) via the tool “LineIn“. You have to do it this way since Gar­age­band only allows the selec­tion of a single input device…

In order to hear your part­ner on the other end of the line you use “Sound­flower­bed” (which comes with Sound­flower) to tap into the vir­tual audio device. That’s it, simple as that :-)

Eigent­lich sollte es ja Apple’s Ant­wort auf Win­dows Vista ja schon im “Früh­jahr” 2007 geben.

Dass die Jungs aus Cali­for­nien die Defi­ni­tion von “Früh­ling” bis ins extreme deh­nen wer­den (sprich Juni) war vie­len schnell klar, da es selbst im “ech­ten” Früh­ling die­sen¡ Jah­res noch viel zu viele Pro­bleme mit dem neuen Betriebs­sys­tem gab. Dann wurde, ich glaub irgend­wann mitte April, ver­kün­det, dass man mit OS X 10.5 des­halb nicht recht­zei­tig fer­tig wer­den würde, da man tem­po­rär so viele Ent­wick­ler in die iPhone Abtei­lung ver­setzt habe, damit wenigs­tens dies plan­mä­ßig auf den Markt gebracht wer­den könne… Leo­pard gäbe es dann erst im Okto­ber.

Naja, jeden­falls war es dann letz­ten Frei­tag soweit, und die Mac-​Gemeinde bekam end­lich, wor­auf sie gewar­tet hatte. Aus mei­ner Sicht ein genia­les, evo­lu­tio­nä­res (nicht revo­lu­tio­nä­res) Update zu einem ohne­hin schon klasse Betriebs­sys­tem. Ich per­sön­lich hatte mich am meis­ten auf Time Machine und Spaces gefreut. Quick­look auch tat­säch­lich zu nut­zen muss man sich erst­mal ange­wöh­nen. Schnel­ler ist es aber merk­lich (da sich sehr viel vor allem unter der Haube getan hat — was viele Leute über­se­hen).

Uiuiui, eigent­lich wollte ich doch öfter schrei­ben. Naja, die Vor­ha­ben. Anfang der Woche hatte man mich auf die­sen inter­es­san­ten Arti­kel in der Time­sOn­line hin­ge­wie­sen…

Als ob die Eng­län­der keine ande­ren Sor­gen hät­ten (oder die Deut­schen) wird hier unter­sucht, wie­viel Klo­pa­pier die Bun­des­wehr ver­braucht hat. Die Zah­len sind aller­dings beste­chend: 800 Mil­lio­nen Klo­pa­pier­rol­len pro Jahr — das sind gut 10 Rol­len pro Sol­dat pro Tag.

Die Sta­tis­tik stimmte so ganz aller­dings nicht, da es sich um 800 Mil­lio­nen Blatt Klo­pa­pier hielt (wer zählt denn sowas so genau?!). Ob es sich jedoch um 1-​, 2-​, 3– oder 4-​lagiges Papier han­delt steht jedoch nicht fest.

Och nee, jetzt schreibe auch ich was dar­über, dabei haben wir doch alle Bes­se­res zu tun…
